I read the book. Fun reading. Don't think the prompts really have much weight. The first story is supposed to use found footage as the horror trope. No found footage present in the story. Monitored security cameras, yes. But that is not found footage. One job! Folllow the prompts.
I do believe that we discuss in the podcast (early episodes) the role of the prompts as jumping off points for story generation, and we definitely gave each other latitude for how much we embraced the prompts.
That is part of the fun, really… taking something from thin air (prompts) and building stories from it.
What you start with in a draft often does not resemble the final product because revision and development are key to the process.
I think Clay and I agree/d that in the end, the goal is ultimately to create an enjoyable, well-written story.
While readers don’t need to listen to the podcast to understand enjoy the stories, those who follow the podcast get the added adventure of listening to the origin story for each piece, then reading the final version to see how it evolved.
That’s not only fun for them, but instructive for folks who want to better understand the creative process which relies, of necessity, on revision. And that is also part of our mission at Beneath the Rain Shadow... to pull back the curtain and demystify the creative process.
*About Found Footage
For readers who haven’t read the story, no spoilers, but I used text threads and security camera timestamps to advance the plot and reveal what the characters themselves could not reveal to the reader; to me, that *is* found footage, and the story falls apart without these tech “paper trails.”
It also resembles the found footage fiction I read for inspiration prior to writing “Nurse Log.”
I invite folks to share their favorite “found footage” short story recs here… it’s a cool subcategory unique to our current age of tech, and I’m down for reading more!
What a cool idea! I can't wait to see what you guys come up with. I feel like if Tamara doesn't have at least 10 kinds of mushrooms in her short story, it won't be worth reading , haha!
well, now I don't know if I should be hungry for a mushroom omelet, scared for my characters, or investing in psilocybin... LOL

Haha! Agreed. I have faith in her though :)
This sounds like a lot of fun! All the best with creating great things from the prompts.
Thanks for tuning in Philip! Hope you enjoy the new show :)
