Episode 4: Problem Child

Beneath the Rain Shadow's April story brought to you by Clay Vermulm

Hey listeners!

Welcome to another episode of Beneath the Rain Shadow :). This month we have a conversation about Clay’s second story of this year-long project, Problem Child.

Problem Child is the story of two brothers who have a YouTube channel about bouldering (a form of climbing where climbers ascend boulders or smaller rock formations without the protection of ropes. Generally boulderers try to climb things in the most difficult way possible). Shy and Uriah (the brothers) are establishing a brand new, never-discovered climbing area, eating some local blackberries, and having a good time when they encounter a strange woman named Jan… from there, things quickly go awry.

This story was written on the following prompt, given by Tamara:

PNW Location: Eastern Washington (The Pshayten Wilderness)

PNW Quirk: Blackberries

Horror Trope: Science gone awry

We hope you enjoy this discussion of Problem Child, the writer’s life, editing and writing in general, and all the other cool stuff Tamara and I have going on, including our most recent book launches and projects!

Thank you for being here and as always, if you have any feedback about the show, please feel free to share it in the comments. We’d LOVE to hear from you :).

Yours,

Tamara and Clay
