Beneath the Rain Shadow: Episode Two-Nurse Log by Tamara Kaye Sellman

Clay and Tamara dive deep into the critique process.

Hello listeners and readers,

Thank you so much for joining us on another episode of Beneath the Rain Shadow, the inaugural series for the Sinister Soup Podcast!

This week, Clay Vermulm and Tamara Kay Sellman continue their journey into the realms of short-form horror fiction.

Last month, for our pilot episode, we introduced the project and Clay presented Tamara with a prompt for her first short story.

For those who missed it, here is a brief summary of what we’re doing on this show:

Each month, one of our authors will write a short story based on a prompt from the other. These stories will culminate in the creation of a short story collection titled Beneath the Rain Shadow. We will do this for a full year, meaning the final collection will contain six stories from each author.

Here’s the other part of the show, the part we’re most excited about!

We will be critiquing each story on air for all of you to listen to, and that will be the bulk of each episode.

For this second episode, Tamara has brought her first story based on the following prompts:

  1. Found Footage

  2. Foraging

  3. The Olympic Peninsula

In her story, Tamara set out to incorporate those three prompts in a meaningful manner. The only other requirements for each story is that they will all be horror and they will all take place somewhere in the Pacific Northwest, which we’re defining as Montana, Idaho, Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia.

The primary focus of episode two is Clay’s critique of Tamara’s story. He goes VERY in-depth on his process as a way to educate those listeners who might be new to the process, but also to introduce his critique style so that future episodes might be a bit more succinct and streamlined.

Our hope with this project is that we can educate people on the writing and critique process as it pertains to short horror fiction and working constructively with your peers. Plus, it motivates us to write and produce some new, quality content!

If you’d like to learn all about the show, you can check out our first episode RIGHT HERE!

If you enjoy the episode, please consider leaving us some feedback in the comments! We are open to any ideas that might make our show better and would love to know what is working for you thus far.

Additionally, you can find more content, including a live-screen share editing session with the authors of each story! These will be released monthly behind our $8 per month paywall.

Behind that same paywall, we will also share copies of the stories as they stand, which will be open to feedback FROM YOU. This is an opportunity for you to help us create the best stories we can and to apply the very skills we are employing in our episodes, should that sound interesting to you :).

Regardless of how you engage with us, we are thankful to have you here! Enjoy episode two and we will see you next month with a story from Clay and a critique from Tamara.

Yours,

Clay Vermulm and Tamara Kaye Sellman
